1)
Bernard is a very introverted person, he is shy and not the kind of type having alot dates or sexual relationships.
This impression fits his behavior concerning the invitation of Lenina when we recognized that he does not feel comfotable talking about sexual relationships in public.
As far as I could figure out it seems like he is insecure wether to go out with her or not.
He knows about her and Henry and maybe he feels intimidated because of Henrys authoritive personality.
Thex are both Alphas but since Bernard is not as tall as usuall for an Alpha he has got problem with other castes and especially with himself…
Nevertheless I think he would love to go out with Lenina but he appears to be uninfluenced by the usual hypnotical-brainwashing therefore I think of him as a person longing for close and stable relationships…

Lenina in contrast is a very selfconfident person and she does not have any problems talking about her sexual-life in public.
She is somehow focused on Henry and moreless likes to stay with him as the only person in her life.
But in order to the system of BNW she dicided to accept Bernards invitation for a date.
Lenina has had alot of guys and she knows about the effect her outward appearence has on males.
She is the typicall example for a pneumatic women.
But we got informed about her inner longing to have a more closer and stable relationship even though she is easy to convince that she should go out with many guys.
Lenina knows about Henry having alot girls so why should he be the only one for her….

8)
Well, I guess I like Bernard most of all the characters.
He is different from all the others an individual so to speak, which is rather rare in BNW since everybody cloned…
He is the only one questioning the ideology of the Words State and I can identify myself with his inner longing for a sense in life…
In difference to all the other members he has problems similiar to ours, he is insecure, not that selfconfident and he is shy when it comes to dates…

2)
I guess Benito Hoover might be named after Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first President of the United States (1929–1933)
I think this name fits completly because he is a very influencial person, authoritive and as it is said in the text a person said to have no problems in life, he could have gotten through life without even touching soma once.
He might have the potencial to become one of the world leaders or at least reach a very high postion in the Worlds State system…

1) Children are being encouraged to have sex because it ist the cheapest way of satisfaction!
People love to have sex it is a cocktail made out of hormones like endorphines which make you feel happy and happy people love the situation they are in, therefore everything remains stable, nobody is complaining..
The concept those kiddos are tought is simple…Everybody belongs to everyone…This through hypnopaedia established rule secures that nobody starts thinking about creating a family, because family means progress family means change, and change is the opposite of stability at least in a society like the World State…

3) He is of the oppinion that our history is of no value no relevance its just the past and sooner or later we will forget about it…
All the great nations all the different ages lead to a new age to a better world therefore we should look into the future because what is done is done and cannot be changed…
I´m of the same oppinion…Nevertheless it is interesting to know at least your own history…
Overall I think history is a directory of the future…without knowing history people are condamned to make the same mistakes over and over again…So there are still alot of things we can learn from our past to make this world a better place…

Reading Log Chapter III

In chapter III I slightly recognized a change regarding to the way the auther presents the story…
Unlike the first two chapters Huxley finally introduced a few more main characters.
We got to know their thaughts and feelings as well as their oppinion concerning The World State.
By alternating the respectively talking person I got the impression of a scenery skip that we usually see in movies when different events come closer and closer till they overlap each other…
In this third chapter it indeed becomes quite clear that the narrator is omniscient.
And through his omniscience he introduces Mustapha Mond one of the ten Word State rulers as well as Bernard Marx an Alpha – Plus and Henry Foster  in equal measure an Alpha – Plus but Marx seem to be way different than all off the other characters we got to know, yet. Like Lenina, Fanny the D.H.C and his fellows.
As far as I could figure out yet, it seems like Bernard somehow knows the tactics of psychological manipulation and the effects of soma but more important it seems like he hates Henry or at least what he represents…
Through several discussions of Fanny and Lenina we were informed about the difficulties that even this perfect and stable system seems to have because Lenina kind of avoided sexual contact to other men besides Henry and Fanny tries to explain the reason why she should not stay with one person…
Since hypnopeadia tought them, or more precisly their subconscience, that everybody belongs to everyone it is almost unbelievable for Fanny not to be promiscious and she advised her to go out with other guys.
And since Marx invited Lennina she thought of him to be the next one to go out with…

2) The Russian scientist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born in 1849 in Ryazan, where his father worked as a village priest. In 1870 Ivan Pavlov abandoned the religious career for which he had been preparing, and instead went into science. There he had a great impact on the field of physiology by studying the mechanisms underlying the digestive system in mammals.

While Ivan Pavlov worked to unveil the secrets of the digestive system, he also studied what signals triggered related phenomena, such as the secretion of saliva. When a dog encounters food, saliva starts to pour from the salivary glands located in the back of its oral cavity.

Pavlov became interested in studying reflexes when he saw that the dogs drooled without the proper stimulus. Although no food was in sight, their saliva still dribbled. It turned out that the dogs were reacting to lab coats. Every time the dogs were served food, the person who served the food was wearing a lab coat. Therefore, the dogs reacted as if food was on its way whenever they saw a lab coat.

In a series of experiments, Pavlov then tried to figure out how these phenomena were linked. For example, he struck a bell when the dogs were fed. If the bell was sounded in close association with their meal, the dogs learnt to associate the sound of the bell with food. After a while, at the mere sound of the bell, they responded by drooling.

Pavlov´s experiments revealed the fact that actions or activities can be connected to senses just as explained in the book concerning the infants.

Infants – visual sense (flowers) – physical experience (e-shock) – antipathy (roses) <—connection

Dog – visual sense (lab coat) or auditory sense (bell) – physical experience (food) – sympathy (lab coat) <— connection

Well after reading the second chapter I´m quite convinced that the more you read, the easier it gets to understand the rather complicated events happening in the book.

The Characters still don´t reveal any charcter traits which moreless raises the expactation of a second story in the book. Not like a parallel but an additional “real” story, which connotes, that even the second chapter is nothing but an introduction leading to the actual story…

If it were up to me writing a book like this I would have at least  presented the main characters…(<–referrs to the idea of a second story)
The fact that the DLHCC manipulates the infants visual sense is quite interesting and amazed me.

They directly connected several horrible events like the electro-shocks  to  all the things that might distract the infants in becoming full-grown workers…

After this therapie they will most likely avoid any contact with the psychologically bound objects.

This secures that none of the clones in this specific groups will break out of ranks, which is most important in a society organized the way Huxley described…

Nevertheless I would rather prefer commiting suicide than living in an association that is directed, manipulated and supressed by the government…Inconceivable…..

Expectedly this novel is nor a funny but a shoking, disturbing and dreadful perspective of the future.
And after reading this second part I think it will get worse and worse….

2)  A human being is no longer created by intercourse but genetic surgery.

Now, ovaries removed in surgery are fertilized in artificial containers and hatched in specific bottles.

This process is called “Bokanovsky Process” and furthermore it includes the proliferation and multiple division of one egg into eight to ninty-six buds which are supposed to grow into identical embryos and sooner or later into full-sized adults.

Its a process of cloning and the clones take way few time to evolve than an embryo procreated in a natural way.

5) Words:

hatchery (p.5, 1.2) Original übersetzung “Brutstätte”  / im Buch wohl gleichbedeutend

predestine (p.11, 1.27) Ü: prädestinieren / im Buch wohl begutachten

freemartin (p.13, 1.29) möglich wäre “unfruchtbar”
Übersetzungsansätze:
(So we allow as many as thirty percent of the female embryos to develop normally. The others get a dose of male sex hormones …..Result: They’re decanted as freemartins – structurally quite normal (except,’ he had to admit, ‘that they do have just the slightest tendency to grow a beard’), but sterile.”

First of all I´ve got to say that reading this book was not as easy as I expected…
I would consider my knowledge of words superior than common and it still was not easy…

It might be because of the rather specific theme of the novel, honestly I have never read a book dealing with a dystopian conception of the future but I have to admit that it so far seems quite interesting.

After the first chapter Iam not quite able to say wether I can identify with one of the presented Characters or not, which may due to the fact that the especially the first 4-5 sides have an overwhelming flow of facts and specifically scientific aspects.

The ideas of gentical reproduction are quite impressiv considering the fact that the book was written by Aldous Huxley in the early 1930th.

As regards to the content the first chapter is mainly about reproduction, modification, manipulating and cloning of embryos.(Bukanovsky Process)

…to be continued (maybe ^^)
